The Raleigh Police Department is proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership with Interaction Advisory Group, LLC, marking the first collaboration of its kind between the department and members of Raleigh's Autism community.
This initiative, inspired by Chief Rico Boyce, reflects the department's continued commitment to strengthening relationships, improving communication, and enhancing safety for all residents.
In January of 2026, 469 sworn officers and more than 40 professional staff members from the Raleigh Police Department enrolled in specialized Autism safety training led by Dustin Chandler, President and Co-Founder of Interaction Advisory Group. The training was funded by a grant from the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities.
The training focuses on equipping personnel with the tools and awareness needed to better recognize and respond to individuals on the Autism spectrum. Through real-world scenarios and community-informed instruction, participants gain insight into effective communication techniques, de-escalation strategies, and sensory considerations that may impact interactions.
This partnership represents a meaningful step forward in fostering trust and understanding between law enforcement and the Autism community. By working directly with subject matter experts and incorporating lived experiences, the Raleigh Police Department is advancing its mission to provide equitable, compassionate, and informed service to all.
The department recognizes that every interaction matters. Through initiatives like this, RPD continues to prioritize training that enhances both officer preparedness and community confidence.
The Raleigh Police Department is planning additional Autism-focused training opportunities for community members in the Fall of 2026. More details will be announced as they become available.
