ADA Story July 11: Bernard Liles

My ADA Story: Valuing My Contributions

By Bernard Liles

Bernard Liles

My first job was working in the mailroom of a large corporation. I would sort the mail and make sure it was delivered to the right department. It was an important job and I really, really loved the work. The company was very understanding and accommodating to my needs.  Unfortunately, I was in an accident which required several operations and rehab. I no longer work in the mailroom, as I now work at a local restaurant. I wear many hats in the restaurant which makes it an interesting and fun place to work. I really like this job, too. The people I work with value me and my contributions. Thanks to the ADA, I’m able to safely take public transportation to work and my employer accommodates my needs so that I can be successful in my job.

Quotes from Bernard Liles:

“The ADA gave me the chance to spread my wings and show people what I can do.  We have only begun to tap into our real potential.”

“I use public transportation to get to work.  The ADA gives me access to use the same things everyone else uses.”

“Because of the ADA, I was able to get the support I needed to get a job I loved.”
