North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities - NCCDD

In May 2017, I attended the National ADA Symposium in Chicago, Illinois to prepare for managing the NCCDD’s NC ADA Network – Fiscal Agent/Intermediary initiative, and I attended a variety of sessions there that increased my knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  In preparation for attending the National ADA Symposium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in June 2018, I decided to go ahead and register for the ADA Coordinator Training Certification Program (ACTCP). 

I realized that attending two consecutive National ADA Symposiums would give me a majority of the credits that I needed to obtain this certification, and I would only need to take a few on-line courses or webinars to obtain the rest of the 40 required credits.

The ACTCP establishes “a foundation of content knowledge essential to performing the role of an ADA Coordinator.”  Registration costs $300, and the individual has three years to obtain the required 40 credits.  Then the annual renewal fee is $25.  With my strong ADA background and interest, it made sense to me to obtain this certification.  It is one more qualification or one more tool I can add to my resume when agencies and organizations are looking for someone to provide training on an ADA topic.  It could also enhance my qualifications to speak at an ADA anniversary celebration. 

The final step to obtaining this certification is passing an exam.  The exam is an open-book, on-line exam consisting of 70 questions.  Individuals must answer 80 percent of the questions correctly to pass.  After all of the ADA sessions we attended, we are not expected to know all of the answers off the top of our heads, but we are expected to know where to find the answers.  I completed the exam on July 1, 2019 and am excited to have my ADA Coordinator certification!
