Join us to hear Dr. Thomas Dooley, an entrepreneurial biomedical research scientist share his profoundly personal message, “The High Cost of Anxiety”. The Opioid epidemic has cost more than 13,000 North Carolinian’s their lives from unintentional overdoses since 1999. Dr. Thomas Dooley has served in various leadership roles in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry and in academia. He was the Founder and CEO of IntegriDerm Inc. and ALtruis LLC, and the recipient of an endowed chair position at Southern Research Institute. He received a BS degree from the University of Kansas and a PhD from Indiana University, followed by a Helen Hay Whitney Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London, England. He has authored 75 scientific publications, 15 issued patents and 4 nonfiction books.
At a young age Dooley’s son was prescribed medication for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, starting him on the path to addiction. Tragically, Dooley lost his son to an opioid overdose in 2017. Since then Dr. Dooley has redoubled his efforts to develop safer medications to treat anxiety disorders. Dooley believes that the opioid crisis began with the unethical use of opioids by doctors and pharmacies. In his presentation Dooley will share some of the promising research, including his own research that will lead to other alternatives for pain and anxiety.
